Why Your Vendor Screwed Up Your SharePoint Project - Elumenotion Blog

Now imagine that you are the customer. What makes you think that on the day you sign the contract with that vendor that the 2-3 people they have on staff who really understand the technology you need are actually available? They might be, but the odds aren't good. Did you check the vendor's references? How do you know that you will get any of the people responsible for that awesome win the reference tells you about?

Good blog post on consultant resources by Doug Ware from elumenotion. An important point here is that SharePoint is complex and having all the expertise to cover it is critical.

A New Twist on CAPTCHA from Vidoop

Company Vidoop has an interesting twist on CAPTCHA's, they embed letters in a s set of images and then ask you questions about the images to get the requested letters. It took me about 12 seconds to fill the CAPTCHA but I think this will be very effective in stoping automated requests. The letter positions don't seem to change but there's additional graphics around the text that changes.

The cost of having humans completing the CAPTCHA's might be the new barrier to entry for spammers.

Google Search Keyboard Shortcuts with Greasemonkey

A friend noted that she would like the capability of moving to the next page on a Google search with a keyboard shortcut. I researched the problem this morning and of course someone had this problem and resolved it.

The solution: Use Firefox and the Greasemonkey Add-on. Google's blog gives you instructions. Note that Greasemonkey must be enabled before you can add scripts.

Lessons Learned - Project Management

Lessons learned meetings don't have to be done at the end of projects; they can be done at the end of milestones, or at set time intervals. The other notion is that lessons learned meetings are only for projects, they can be done for vendors too.

I did a Google search and found plenty of information on the subject. Below are core ideas about lessons learned:
  • The goals of lessons learned meetings are to encourage compiling and dissemination of proven project management techniques
  • These meetings enable us to learn from the past and improve our team
  • As a project manager be passionate about writing down your mistakes, keep a log of lessons during the project
  • There needs to be an incentive for project managers to act on lessons learns. The organization must reward efficiency and self-analysis
  • Lessons learned meetings should identify the good and the bad and why things turned out that way
  • If you have the lessons learned meeting you must act on them: keep a knowledge base, use lessons when projects start
  • You can have as many lessons learned meetings as you want but if you don't do anything they are worthless
  • The lessons learned meetings should be open and encourage self-analysis from the attendees
